Ira Singhal is a native of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. She completed her schooling at Sophia Girls School in Meerut and Loreto Convent School in Delhi. She earned her B.Tech degree from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology and attended the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi, to pursue her MBA.

The Union Public Service Commission examination assesses an aspirant’s knowledge and dedication to serving the general public. Today, we will share the inspiring story of a specially-abled woman who not only cracked this exam but also fought legally to secure her position as an IAS officer.

Meet Ira Singhal, who cleared the UPSC exam in 2014 with an All India Rank of 1. Interestingly, she also cleared the examination in 2010, 2011, and 2013 but was allotted the IRS due to her disability.

Ira Singhal is a native of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. She completed her schooling at Sophia Girls School in Meerut and Loreto Convent School in Delhi. She earned her B.Tech degree from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology and attended the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi, to pursue her MBA.

After completing the MBA programme, she worked for Coca-cola company as a marketing intern. Later, she joined Cadbury India as strategy Manager. 

During an old interview, she had said that once curfew was imposed in her city and she came to know that the District Magistrate is the person who holds the power to impose it. There she got impressed with IAS and decided to pursue UPSC. 

Ira was selected in the UPSC examinations in 2010, 2011, and 2013 but was not allocated the IAS due to her 62 percent locomotor disability. Determined to challenge this decision, she took her case to court against the Commission. In 2014, she won the case. She finally cracked the exam in 2014 with an All India Rank of 1.
