New Looney Tunes Movie Sets Theatrical Release Date After Being Rescued From Warner Bros.

More than two years after being shelved by Warner Bros., The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie has received a release date. Ketchup Entertainment, who acquired the animated movie back in August, has set an early 2025 release date for the hotly-anticipated Looney Tunes feature.

Per Deadline, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie is scheduled to hit theaters on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025. Ahead of its wide release, the animated movie will make its North American premiere on Oct. 18, 2024, at the Animation Is Film Festival. This is being done to allow the movie to qualify for the Best Animated Feature race at next year’s Academy Awards. The Day the Earth Blew Up is the fourth original Looney Tunes movie to receive a theatrical release and the first since 2021’s Space Jam: A New Legacy.

The Day the Earth Blew Up Was Originally Developed for HBO Max

Originally greenlit for HBO Max in 2021, The Day the Earth Blew Up was shelved by Warner Bros. Discovery in August 2022 as part of its content write-offs. However, production continued and Warner Bros. Animation was able to shop it around, with Ketchup acquiring The Day the Earth Blew Up shortly after the movie’s successful premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2024.

Per the official synopsis, The Day the Earth Blew Up “stars Porky Pig and Daffy Duck as unlikely heroes and Earth’s only hope when facing the threat of alien invasion. The movie unfolds a rich Porky & Daffy story that fans have never seen before: In this buddy-comedy of epic proportions, our heroes race to save the world, delivering all the laugh-out-loud gags and vibrant visuals that have made the Looney Tunes so iconic, but on a scope and scale yet to be experienced.”
