Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’s Matthew Lillard Reveals When Sequel Filming Begins

Matthew Lillard, star of the hit horror movie Five Nights at Freddy’s, has confirmed that production for the sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, is set to begin this month around Halloween. Now streaming On-Demand, the first film became a fan favorite when Universal Pictures released it simultaneously in U.S. theaters and on Peacock on October 27, 2023. It went on to gross nearly $300 million worldwide, leading to a sequel slated for release in 2025.

During an interview with ComicBook at New York Comic-Con on October 17, Lillard, who played the antagonist in the first film, said production on Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 would start in “10 days” — putting the filming date at October 27. Lillard told Collider that he’s read the script and his scenes will begin filming in November, saying:

“So this morning, I got a text with my dates. So, my dates are the beginning of November and another series of dates. So, we’re going to work. I’m really thrilled. I think the script’s fantastic.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s is one of the most iconic video game series, and director Emma Tammi said recently that she drew inspiration from Steven Spielberg and the Joker movie to adapt it for the big screen. She collaborated with game developer Scott Cawthon to bring his popular video game to life for Blumhouse and teamed with him once more to helm the sequel that is reportedly filming in Chalmette, Louisiana. The state’s entertainment website lists a project titled Music Box that is scheduled to shoot from October 28, 2024, to January 31, 2025. Fans connected this to the second game, as a music box is used to keep the killer puppet at bay.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Casting, Release Date

Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) stars in Five Nights at Freddy’s as a troubled security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. On his first night, he quickly discovers that surviving the shift won’t be as easy as expected, as he is terrorized by the pizzeria’s homicidal animatronic mascots. While critics panned the movie, it earned over $291 million worldwide. The PG-13 mystery thriller is one of the highest-grossing films for Blumhouse, surpassing Split (2016), which earned $278 at the global box office.

During his conversation with Collider, Lillard expressed excitement about being part of an iconic project that is beloved by a new generation. “It is a special thing that everybody is very excited about. I hear about it all the time and I am excited, as well,” he said. The full cast and plot details for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 have not yet been announced, but Lillard confirmed that Hutcherson is reprising his role, saying:

“The whole cast is great, and I think we’re all excited to come back. I think we learned a lot in the first film . I think the second film is going to sort of benefit from those things. We’re all excited about where the movie is at right now.”

Cawthon recently posted four pages from the sequel script on social media but teased that only one of them was authentic. “It will be up to the fanbase to figure out which page is REAL,” he wrote on X (formally Twitter) in August.
