Timpview players takes the field before the non-region game against Skyridge in Provo on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024.

According to the Utah High School Activities Association’s ratings percentage index (RPI) method of playoff seeding, the favorite is the No. 1 seed.

That means that all of the Utah Valley high school football teams heading to state in 2024 can play the “we are underdogs” card.

With Ridgeline (4A), Roy (5A) and Corner Canyon (6A) getting top billing in their respective classifications, those three teams also get the biggest target on their backs in the upcoming weeks.

Meanwhile, teams like Provo, Spanish Fork, Timpview, Skyridge, Lone Peak, and Lehi are all lurking in the top four seeds in their divisions, setting up some exciting potential matchups.

It was an excellent season for the Bulldogs, who earned the No. 2 slot in Class 4A with a 7-2 record. Ironically, Provo was possibly aided a little bit in getting that spot by having its crosstown rivalry game with Timpview cancelled due to online threats.

The Bulldogs will look to break their three-game playoff losing streak, which included heartbreaking defeats to Box Elder (24-21) in 2022 and to Payson (27-21) in 2023.

The Dons are the No. 4 seed in the classification and also get a bye to the second round.

No. 12-seed Timpanogos will host No. 21 Bear River in the first round on Oct. 25, while No. 13 Salem Hills will welcome No. 20 Tooele to town to start the tournament. No. 22 Mountain View heads to Vernal to play No. 11 Uintah.

In Class 5A, Timpview (6-2) may be the team no one wants to see although the Thunderbirds ended up with the No. 4 seed. Right behind Timpview is No. 5 Orem (8-2) and No. 7 Maple Mountain (7-2), wish all three through to the second round.

No. 13 Springville will host No. 20 Highland in the first round on Oct. 25, while No. 19 Wasatch will play at No. 14 West Jordan and No. 22 Cedar Valley heads north to face No. 11 Woods Cross.

Class 6A, as expected, has the most Utah Valley teams near the top with Skyridge (8-2) getting the No. 2 seed, Lone Peak (8-2) at No. 3 and Lehi (7-2) slotted at No. 4.

The Falcons will start their playoff run in the second round on Nov. 1 when they take on the winner of the matchup between No. 15 Riverton and No. 18 Pleasant Grove that will take place in Riverton on Oct. 25.

The Knights will host No. 14 Herriman in the second round, while the Pioneers will square off against No. 13 Layton in Lehi.

No. 16 Westlake will host No. 17 Copper Hills on Oct. 25 with the winner advancing to face the Chargers in the second round.

The two small schools in Utah Valley that play football will also get their playoffs underway.

ALA (the No. 7-seed in Class 2A) welcomes No. 10 Providence Hall to Spanish Fork on Oct. 25, while UMACW (the No. 8-seed in 8-man football) plays No. 9 Monument Valley in the play-in game on the same day.
