  • ‘His Body Type Might Make Him Look Fat…’: Suryakumar Yadav busts myths around Sarfaraz Khan’s fitness

Sarfaraz Khan played a crucial role in India’s comeback against New Zealand, scoring 150 after an initial collapse, while Suryakumar Yadav defended him against fitness criticisms, highlighting his dedication and work ethic.

Sarfaraz Khan smashed his maiden Test hundred against New Zealand.

Sarfaraz Khan was pivotal in India’s stunning fightback during the first Test against New Zealand, scoring an impressive 150 after the team had collapsed to just 46 and faced a daunting 356-run deficit in the first innings. Despite an earlier impactful debut against England, where he recorded three fifties in three matches, he was omitted from the playing XI against Bangladesh. However, following an injury to Shubman Gill, Sarfaraz seized his chance in the first Test and delivered a standout performance.

Sarfaraz Khan has emerged as a strong contender for a spot on the flight to Australia for the upcoming five-match Test series, following his impressive performance. While cricket pundits have praised his exceptional talent, some have expressed concerns regarding his fitness.

Suryakumar Yadav, having observed Sarfaraz Khan’s dedication firsthand, noted that the batter is diligently focusing on improving his fitness ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Surya also mentioned that Rishabh Pant has arranged for a chef to manage Sarfaraz’s diet, supporting him in achieving his fitness goals.

Speaking to Indian Express, Suryakumar Yadav said, “Sarfaraz is working on his fitness with the Indian team strength and conditioning coach and Rishabh (Pant) has provided him with a chef who is taking care of his food. The intent is that by the time he reaches Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, his body is in a better shape. Fitness is important in this sport as he gets older, body will change. He is working hard now, he will be fine in future.”

Surya firmly defended Sarfaraz Khan against those who question his fitness, stating that while the batter may appear overweight, he possesses the ability to score big centuries. He emphasized that he has never witnessed Sarfaraz skip practice or take the sport for granted, underscoring the latter’s commitment and dedication to his game.

“His body type might make him look fat but if you ask him to bat 450 balls, score double hundred, triple hundred, daddy hundred, he has that skill. I think the team has a similar demand to make big hundreds, play game changing knocks… I have never seen him skipping practice even on match day. If there is a game, he will get up at 5 am, bat for one hour near his home, and then join the team bus. After the game he will go to the nearby ground and bat again,” said Suryakumar Yadav.
