Succes of Solar Energy Project in Africa

Companies working in the field of solar power to some of the poorest homes in central and western Africa are among the fastest-growing on a continent. The Governments of these countries have struggled for a long time to deal with some of the world’s worst infrastructure and the complications of climate change.

The companies, often African-owned, operate in areas where the vast majority of people live off the grid, offering products ranging from solar lamps that allow children to study at night to elaborate home systems that power kitchen appliances and plasma TVs. Prices range from less than $20 for a lamp to thousands of dollars for appliances and entertainment systems.
Rwanda built a solar power plant on a 17-hectare field with 28,000 panels at a cost of $23.7 million in 2014.
It created 350 jobs, increased Rwanda’s electricity production by 6% and provides energy to 15,000 homes.

The World Bank’s Global Solar Atlas describes Africa´s solar potential as a “unique opportunity” to provide affordable, reliable and sustainable electricity to “a large share of humanity where improved economic opportunities and quality of life are the most needed”.
Central and western Africa have some of the lowest electrification rates in the world. In West Africa, where 220 million people live without electricity. Many rely on kerosene and other expensive fuels that fill homes and businesses with smoke and can cause fires.
