Port Shepstone Secondary congratulates Grade 12 learner Alizwa Sobuza for her outstanding achievement at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists-International Science Fair in Gauteng recently.

Alizwa was one of the select few to represent KZN.

The fair brought together the brightest young scientists from across South Africa and various countries around the world.

For her project on ‘Pollution in the Umbango River’ in the Earth Sciences category, Alizwa worked tirelessly to prove that microorganisms are not only present in the Umbango River but also contribute to the high pollution levels in the river.

For her efforts, she received a gold medal, a trophy for the best senior learner in the Earth Sciences category and a full bursary to study mechanical engineering at any university in the country.

Alizwa is grateful to her parents, Nolitha Nomonde and Kumkani Sobuza, mentor Mevashnee Pather, and Port Shepstone Secondary for the opportunity and guidance to participate in the expo.

“I wish more youth would participate as it opens so many doors. This is an experience that I will never forget,” she said.
