Warner Bros. chairman and CEO, Channing Dungey, shared new details about production on the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. HBO announced its reboot series back in April 2023, and Variety has reported that the upcoming series will delve far more into the books by J.K. Rowling than the movies ever did. In the interview, Dungey called working within the Wizarding World an “unbelievable dream,” adding:
“As somebody who is a huge fan of the books, the opportunity to get to explore them in a little bit more in-depth that you can in just a two-hour film… that’s the whole reason we’re on this journey.”
Regarding production, Dungey confirmed that the “writing staff was in place and they’re doing what they need to do.” Currently, Francesca Gardiner is attached to the series as head writer and Mark Mylod will direct. Casting have also now “opened up in the U.K. and Ireland, so the process is moving along.” Fans wait anxiously to see who will be cast in the starring roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, with the casting call specifying that children must be residents of the U.K. or Ireland and between the ages of nine and 11 in April 2025. This timeline could suggest that’s when HBO intends to begin filming or preparing for principal photography. The casting call also states that production is “committed to inclusive, diverse casting.”
Initially conceived as a faithful book adaptation with each season of the series focusing on one book in the seven-book series, the project is now expected to run for “10 consecutive years.” This constitutes a massive undertaking for whoever is cast in the series, and teases just how much more in-depth the show is willing to go. The Harry Potter reboot is expected to air in late 2026 or early 2027.
Chopped Book Details We Hope To See Adapted on HBO
In February, David Zaslav confirmed the show’s target debut for 2026. Zaslav shared that he, along with HBO and Max heads Casey Bloys and Channing Dungey, met with the now-controversial author and creator J.K. Rowling, who will be involved in the project.
“We spent some real time with J.K. and her team. Both sides just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max.”
With the excitement of a new in-depth adaptation, fans have speculated and shared what moments or storylines from the novels they most want included in the show. Some of the most popular are cut subplots, like Hermoine’s efforts to free the house-elves and her creation of S.P.E.W. a.k.a. the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare. Others are hoping for a deeper examination of certain characters, at least in the latter seasons.

Then there are the many mysteries of Hogwarts and the untouched details like Peeves, other ghosts, the goings-on of other houses beyond Gryffindor’s, Madam Puddifoot’s Tea Shop, and so much more. Needless to say, there is a well of magical shenanigans and plot lines in the books that could be explored in the new series.
