A proposal to breathe new life into Bahrain’s traditional crafts, which are at risk of disappearing amid modern influences, was submitted to Parliament yesterday.

Led by MP Mohammed Al Janahi and his colleagues, the initiative aims to boost the economy and strengthen cultural identity by supporting local artisans and showing their work.

Alongside Al Janahi, the proposal has been presented by Dr Hisham Al Ashiri, Lulwa Al Rumaihi, Mohammed Olaiwi, and Jaleela Al Sayyed.

Bahrain’s cherished craft traditions, including dhow building and pottery, passed down through generations, are in danger as younger people turn away from these practices.

Cultural identity

The proposal seeks to revive these arts, stimulate economic activity, and reinforce our cultural identity in an increasingly globalised world.

The representatives argue that traditional crafts are essential for keeping our cultural and national identity alive. They believe that protecting these skills is not just important; it is a duty that enriches our understanding of history and values.

National income

By supporting these industries, they think we can drive economic growth, create jobs, and help small businesses, thereby diversifying our national income.

Additionally, the proposal makes a strong case for the role of traditional crafts in drawing in tourists.

By promoting and marketing these crafts, Bahrain can enhance its tourism sector, giving visitors a rich cultural experience and raising the country’s profile as a place steeped in heritage.
