Nicole Kidman is now one of the most famous faces on the planet. From her breakthrough, the Aussie actor went from strength to strength, sharing the screen with heavy hitters like Dustin Hoffman and appearing in huge franchises like Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever before cementing herself as one of the biggest stars of the 21st century. But, like all film fans, Kidman is still plagued by the age-old question of what her favourite movie is.

For any film fan, choosing a favourite movie is a difficult task—it’s akin to a parent selecting their favourite child. For actors, who likely watch films constantly, the challenge must be even greater. When Kidman was asked to pick her top four, she found it impossible and ultimately settled on a final decision.

Kidman has worked with a wide range of directors and co-stars and explored diverse roles throughout her career, which began with her film debut in 1983 at just 16 years old in the Australian holiday classic Bush Christmas. Over the years, the Kidman has successfully navigated both indie and blockbuster films, and by now, it seems she could effortlessly take on any role.

By the time the 21st century rolled around, the actor was more than just a household name – she was an undisputed and indomitable superstar. Now, she has a career spanning 40 years and a filmography that’s close to 70 titles. Fans of Kidman would likely consider some of these movies as their favourites of all time. But for Kidman, she prefers something a little more classic.

The star of Big Little Lies, Moulin Rouge, and now A Family Affair responded much as anyone might when asked her favourite films on the red carpet—with a long, exaggerated groan and mock frustration. When finally coaxed by Letterboxd, she revealed: “I’ve seen When Harry Met Sally over and over again. I love Meg Ryan, I love Billy Crystal.”

When Harry Met Sally is a beloved favourite around the world, Kidman’s choice couldn’t be more fitting. As she points out, it’s a film you can watch repeatedly until the dialogue becomes second nature—especially the iconic “I’ll have what she’s having” scene. The film’s warmth and charm are undeniably addictive, and it’s easy to agree that the Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal classic stands as one of the best.

The film was written by Nora Ephron, who went on to write and direct many other romantic comedies, such as You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. However, When Harry Met Sally was directed by Rob Reiner, the man behind This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, and The Princess Bride. Conceived through multiple meetings between Ephron and Reiner, they devised a plotline about two friends who know having sex will ruin their friendship, yet do it anyway.

It’s the kind of plot that would be unstoppable and enjoyable if it were to be watched in 100 years. Reiner and Ephron condense the film down to romance and friendship—nothing else matters in the world of When Harry Met Sally, and that’s why it is so good and, most likely, why Nicole Kidman considers it her favourite movie of all time.
