Uber Auto and Moto to generate INR 36,000 crore in economic activity in India by 2024: Report, ET Auto

Driver-partners reportedly earn an additional 60% annually through Uber compared to their next best alternative type of work.Ride-hailing app Uber anticipates that its Uber Auto and Moto services will generate economic activity worth INR 36,000 crore in 2024, according to its India Economic Impact Report. Compiled by Public First and released on 23 October 2024, the report sheds light on the multifaceted economic contributions of Uber in India, including enhanced mobility, increased earnings for drivers, and improved safety for passengers.

The report highlights that Uber’s diverse services, ranging from local rides to intercity journeys, continue to evolve to meet India’s travel needs. Of particular note are the Uber Moto and Uber Auto services, which have become essential in providing last-mile connectivity. These services not only ease daily commutes but also enhance economic activity by connecting people to jobs and opportunities.

Uber’s Impact on driver earnings and livelihoods

Key findings of the report emphasise Uber’s role in supporting a broader economic footprint. Driver-partners reportedly earn an additional 60% annually through Uber compared to their next best alternative type of work. Furthermore, Uber is estimated to boost drivers’ earnings by about 24% compared to working without the platform. Significantly, 65% of Uber drivers feel they have more opportunities thanks to the platform.

Our 2024 Economic Impact report highlights our role in supporting drivers, improving the travel experience of riders, and promoting sustainable options. We are proud to have made a significant contribution to India’s economy, showing our commitment to connecting communities and creating livelihoods.”

Safety, sustainability, and urban mobility improvements

Safety remains a top priority for Uber, particularly for female riders. The report states 95% of female riders cite safety as their main reason for using Uber, and 84% believe taking an Uber is the safest way to get home. This focus on safety has been a significant factor in Uber’s popularity in India, the company said.

Uber believes it has also transformed urban mobility in the country. According to the report, 84% of Indians believe the app has improved the quality of transportation in India.

The report also discusses congestion and pollution concerns in major cities. In Delhi, 74% of riders show a preference for electric vehicles, and 56% are willing to choose an EV option even at a higher cost. In Bengaluru, 93% of riders consider time savings a key reason for using Uber, and 80% believe the service has improved travel speed.
