If people are only expecting Hollywood quality superhero films, Krrish should not have worked

As he counts down to the release of his latest directorial Bagheera, filmmaker Dr Suri is quite pumped about the response to the trailer, and the comparisons that have been made with Hollywood superhero films. Bagheera, as seen in the trailer, follows the template of popular films in the genre, with the director admitting that he’s presented his film like a Batman movie. Is Dr Suri not worried about the expectations he has set for his movie? Audiences will either applaud his effort or pan him for not living up to the expectations.

People will feel anyone can become Bagheera: Dr Suri

“If audiences here have Hollywood-esque expectations, I don’t see how Krrish could become the major success that it did. People have seen much better Hollywood movies than Krrish and yet, they loved it. With Bagheera, we have tried to present it visually like a Hollywood film and I believe no one will turn around and say it is a cheap copy. But the story, of how an upright police officer becomes Bagheera, that is so local and relatable that audiences will walk out of the theatres thinking anybody can become Bagheera,” Dr Suri reasons.

But then, a film like Minnal Murali has proved that you don’t need a fancy suit (although he gets one eventually) or gadgets to strike a chord with audiences. Whereas Bagheera follows the template of dozens of other Hollywood superhero movies. “Minnal Murali is a mind-blowing movie. I can’t even imagine how one phenomenon happening to two people turns one into a hero and the other into the villain. That’s a wonderful way of telling a story, which I fell in love with it. Minnal Murali was an extraordinarily- made movie. Bagheera, on the other hand, does not have any superpower and yet he fights evil to protect society,” says Dr Suri.

As pleased as he is about the comparisons his film has drawn, Dr Suri is also clear that he wants audiences to watch the film with no pre-conceived notions about it.
