Euro Film Festival 2024 kicks off

The 2024 annual European Union Film Festival kicked off on Thursday at the European Union (EU) Ambassador’s residence in Lilongwe, setting the stage for a week-long celebration of storytelling through film.

Hosted by  EU Ambassador Rune Skinnebach, the event marked the beginning of a cultural exchange that runs until November 2, featuring screenings in Lilongwe, Blantyre and Dowa.

Skinnebach: This is a great opportunity

Speaking during the launch, the EU envoy highlighted the festivals’ role in strengthening bonds between European and Malawian culture creating a platform that outside administration brings people together.

“This is a great opportunity for us to foster stronger ties with the cultural part of Malawi, allowing our Malawian counterparts to appreciate European culture through films. Films foster a mutual understanding of where we are coming from and who we are, but they can further spark dialogue on various issues, including democracy,” he said.

Guest of honour Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Owen Chomanika said film-making is one of the tools that add value to Malawi identity.

He further said such events foster appreciation for the progress made in film-making across borders and celebrate achievements of both European and Malawian film industries.

“In a globalised world, we cannot be in isolation. We need to understand what other people do and one of the best ways is through films. They portray a picture of various places and show us where we can do better to improve our film industry,” he said.

The festival’s organiser, Shamillah Elias, described this year’s lineup as a diverse mix of drama, action, romance and true-life documentaries.

“There is too much talent in Malawi and this is an opportunity for us to show that the film industry has untapped potential while appreciating the works of others, including the European film industry,” she said.

With a schedule spanning several cities, the Euro Film Festival held screenings at Crossroads Hotel Cinema in Lilongwe while others will be done in Chiradzulu and Blantyre, with the last at Tumaini Festival in Dowa.
