Star Wars’ Mandalorian & Grogu Reportedly Finished Filming

The Force is strong with at least one Star Wars film as it has wrapped filming. It has been five years since the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While that normally wouldn’t be a long time to wait between Star Wars films, as fans waited 16 years between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace, it is a long time considering that when Disney bought Lucasfilm back in 2012, their goal was to have a new Star Wars movie out every year. Four Star Wars films are now in active development, including a crossover film between various Disney+ series directed by Dave Filoni, James Mangold’s first Jedi movie, a film centered on Rey set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, and The Mandalorian & Grogu.

According to Puck News, The Mandalorian & Grogu has finally wrapped filming. Directed by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian & Grogu will continue the story started on the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, seemingly replacing Season 4 of the series with a feature film. Filming began in August 2024,and has now seemingly wrapped two years ahead of its planned release date of May 22, 2026. By the time The Mandalorian & Grogu premieres in theaters, it will have been seven years since The Rise of Skywalker.

The news of The Mandalorian & Grogu comes alongside reports that writer Steven Knight has departed the Rey-centric Star Wars film, and now it is unclear if it will make its rumored December 2026 release date. It is worth noting that Disney nor Lucasfilm ever gave a release date for the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed film. The December 2026 release date is just there because Lucasfilm has saved that date for an unknown movie.

What is the Future of Star Wars?

The Star Wars franchise has gained a reputation in recent years for announcing projects that never make it off the ground. Now, while various film franchises are filled with false starts, none have been in the public spotlight like Star Wars. Filmmakers like Josh Trank, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Patty Jenkins, and Taika Waititi have all had Star Wars projects announced, but they have never materialized. Meanwhile, films like Rogue One, Solo, and The Rise of Skywalker all had director changes before making it to screens. Despite all of that, Star Wars is changing lanes from investing mainly in Disney+ streaming series to become a force in cinemas once again. This seems to be partly the reason why series like The Acolyte were canceled, Andor will conclude with its upcoming second season, The Mandalorian Season 4 was scrapped in place of a movie, and no new television series have been announced beyond Ahsoka Season 2.

The Star Wars Mandoverse Has Already Overstayed Its Welcome

While Star Wars is going all in on the Mandoverse with spin-offs and feature films, the franchise might need to move on from this era of stories.

There is a chance that if James Cameron needs more time on Avatar: Fire and Ash, that movie could move to the December 2026 release date Disney has earmarked for an unknown Star Wars film, while The Mandalorian & Grogu could take the December 19, 2025, slot with filming seemingly complete. If The Mandalorian & Grogu doesn’t move, it will open just three weeks after Avengers: Doomsday. Disney hopefully can avoid another incident like when Solo: A Star Wars Story opened one month after Avengers: Infinity War.
