We’re 8 Weeks Through The NFL Season And The Eagles Still Haven’t Scored A Single Point In The First Quarter Of A Football Game

Life is all about perspective. It’s all about how you choose to look at things. So if you wanted to look for a positive today, the Philadelphia Eagles men’s professional football team have scored points on their opening drive for the first time all year. The only issue, however, is that Jake Elliott’s field goal came 50 seconds into the 2nd quarter. 

That’s because the Bengals’ opening drive was 17 plays long and took 10 minutes off the clock, and put 7 points on the board for Cincinnati. So it’s not like the Eagles’ offense had much time to work with. Which means for the 7th game in a row, the Philadelphia Eagles haven’t scored a single point in the 1st quarter. 

For the previous 6 games, that was an offensive issue. Whether it was dog shit scripted plays, or just the players on the field not being able to execute early on, it was the offense letting this team down early. This week we see it’s a full team effort to suck this hard early in games. The defense couldn’t get off the field, they had multiple chances on 3rd downs, but Joe Burrow just kept keeping the drives alive. 

Is it crazy to think the Eagles should have just kicked a field goal on 2nd down before the end of the 1st quarter? It’s the final week of October, and they’re still yet to score in the 1st quarter. They could have just put that story to bed with a field goal on 2nd and 12 from Cincinnati’s 18. Boom, narrative about slow starts is over. Instead, they run another play that gets called back for holding. End of the quarter, and then they still get the same result by only putting 3 on the board early in the 2nd. Maybe this is 20/20 hindsight, but Nick Sirianni has to have a feel for the moment and realize that points in the 1st meant more than possibly finishing that drive with a touchdown.
