Love, prejudice, and revolution: Musical brings history to life

Step into the turbulent world of late 1980s South Africa, where forbidden love, racial tensions, and the dawn of democracy collide in ‘The Scent of Change’, the latest theatrical masterpiece from Durban University of Technology’s Drama and Production Studies Department.

Running from October 28 to 31 at the Courtyard Theatre, this electrifying new musical, penned and directed by the visionary Dr Verne Rowin Munsamy, with musical direction by Zenneth Cibane and choreography by Mdu Mtshali, delves deep into a forgotten chapter of history where Black and Indian pupils were first integrated into Chatsworth schools- testing the fragile waters of a divided nation on the cusp of freedom.

At the heart of the story is a romantic narrative between Preshni, an academically gifted Indian girl, and James, a Black pupil newly introduced to her school. Their love story unfolds against a backdrop of uncertainty, prejudice, and the evolving hope of a united South Africa.

The production, part of the third-year Performance Techniques module, serves as a professional platform for final-year students to showcase their talents before graduating.

Featuring original music and lyrics by Munsamy, and compositions by Cibane and musical producer, Niwake Jama, the show offers a fresh blend of dynamic choreography and live musical performances. The Scent of Change highlights the steps taken towards freedom in South Africa, celebrating a crucial moment in history through art.
