Carmine release first single and music video for upcoming EP
Victoria and Vancouver Island have a lot of musical talent, and Victoria Buzz wants to highlight some of the best and brightest local artists and bands.
Every Monday, there will be a fresh ‘New Music Monday’ article to help people find and support local artists and bands that are up-and-coming, well established or hidden gems!
For this endeavour, Victoria Buzz has partnered with our good friends at CFUV 101.9 FM, UVic’s campus radio station, to find and select the musicians and bands for this regular column.
This week, Carmine is the New Music Monday highlight!
Carmine is a brand new, synth-heavy alt-rock band that’s based out of Victoria.
The band is comprised of Reghan Geddes on lead vocals, Rowan Hensley on keyboards, Breanna Montague on bass and Brett Rose on drums.
Notably, the band chose not to bring a guitarist into the mix to set themselves apart from the typical alt-rock band dynamic, instead featuring Hensley’s keyboard chops and Montague’s bass prowess more heavily in the mix.
“It was definitely a conscious decision on our part,” Rose told Victoria Buzz.
“We wanted to shake it up because most bands I’ve been in, and Reghan at least, have all been pretty guitar-centred.”
Carmine came together in October of last year when Hensley and Montague, who had previously played in a band together, sought to put together a new project.
They had played a show with Rose and Geddes before and reached out to see if Rose would be interested in coming onboard to play drums for them.
As luck would have it, they were still in need of a singer, so Rose said he reached out to Geddes, and she was also quick to say yes.
Once they had all gotten the chance to play together, they knew they had something special on their hands and got to work writing and recording.
“It was just the coming together of two groups of people really,” Rose explained.
Soon, Carmine had a few songs under their belt and had gotten some demos recorded, they reached out to an acquaintance, Mike Noble of the band Hotel Mira.
Noble liked what he heard and agreed to help Carmine produce their debut EP.
By March 2024, Carmine had started recording and sending their work to Noble and was writing through this process trying to sculpt a sound that was unique to them.
One of these songs, “Lived So Slow” ended up being the first single and the band chose to make a music video to go along with it.
“We all agreed and even Mike [Noble] said, ‘we kind of captured lightning in a bottle here you guys,’” said Rose.
“Lived So Slow” was officially released by Carmine on October 4th and is just the first song to come out off an EP that will be released sometime in the new year.
The song stemmed from a bassline Montague brought to the band. From there Rose came up with a drum part that was complimentary and Geddes wrote the lyrics after stepping out to be alone with her thoughts, according to Rose.
The song, and the accompanying music video are based on a story that was created by Geddes that follows a gunslinger in the wild west.
“Gunslinger in the wild west is basically hired by the wife of this horrible, detestable man who lives in this frontier town,” Rose explained.
“He’s a horrible husband in more than one way, he cheats people out of their money at cards, he’s an alcoholic—people don’t like him but they kind of tolerate him because he’s mean and evil.”
The narrative is that a duel must be held between the gunslinger and the evil husband.
“If you want to read into it, it’s more about cutting the cord on a toxic or abusive relationship, something that just needs to be done, but it’s way easier said than done,” stated Rose.
“There’s always some sort of fear or complication that comes with cutting that off, whether it’s loneliness, or afraid of how that person might react.”

Carmine says their next local show will be playing at ‘Lights of Wonder’ which takes place annually in Centennial Square.
They will be playing this event on Monday, December 23rd.
“I love going down to see the lights and I’ve seen a couple bands play there before, so it’s kind of cool that we’re going to be up there on stage,” said Rose.
