As 2023 drew to a close, the coming-of-age drama Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (KGHK) premiered on Netflix, and something shifted in the social media landscape. In an era increasingly defined by our obsession with online presence, the film felt both authentic and deeply relatable. Even more impressively, it marked the directorial debut of Arjun Varain Singh. “I’m really proud to have made a film that our generation can call its own, that represents us and acts as a small time capsule,” he says. “I’m especially glad it encouraged some folks to spend a little less time on their devices.”

While the film captures the essence of what being online means to people, there’s one particular aspect that Arjun is most chuffed about. “What truly stands out for me,” he shares, “is hearing from someone who reached out after watching the movie. They told me that seeing Imaad’s trauma unfold, and how he finally confronted it by accepting it and shedding his emotional armour, gave them the courage to face the trauma from their own childhood. That, to me, is the heart of this entire experience. It’s why we do what we do, and that’s what gives me the energy to create something new.”

Over the past few years, Arjun’s focus on making KGHK led him to put other important aspects of life and relationships on the back burner. But this year has been all about recalibration. He’s been travelling, soaking in art, seeking inspiration, and reconnecting with the people who matter most – trying to do a little more of what was preached in the film – living in the moment. Now, with a renewed passion for storytelling and a willingness to explore new creative horizons, he’s excited about crafting a film tailored for the immersive, big-screen experience. “While I’ll continue focusing on the human experience, I’m also excited to venture into sci-fi,” he says. “I want to take on a creative producer role as well, helping to discover and support emerging voices – just as Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti did for me.”

So, what’s on the horizon for Arjun in 2025? “I plan to go with the flow: travel, experience, and write – in that order.” With that spirit, it’s clear his journey ahead will be just as vibrant and impactful as his debut, reminding us that the most profound tales are often written by those who live them to the fullest.
