Scary Movie 6 to Feature Return of the Wayans Brothers
If Miramax and Paramount Pictures wanted to get fans interested in the Scary Movie franchise again, this was the exact way to do it. After being ousted from the franchise after 2001’s Scary Movie 2, The Wayans Brothers are returning to the series they created for the first time in over twenty years. This represents a full-circle moment for them, who will now get to resurrect the brand for a new generation, following how dirty they were treated once the franchise changed hands because of the Weinstein brothers and Dimension Films.
Per Deadline, Miramax and Paramount Pictures are spearheading the new Scary Movie, first announced at CinemaCon, with The Wayans brothers being brought back to help craft the new film’s original screenplay. The project is expected to begin shooting next year, and a full theatrical release is planned for the film. The Wayans brothers will also be getting a screenwriting help from Rick Alvarez, with all of them also being on board as producers.
When the reboot was announced, many fans hoped that Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans would be involved in some capacity, since their voices were dearly missed by the franchise after Scary Movie 2. The first two movies were a true family affair, with Keenen Ivory Wayans writing and directing the first two films, while Marlon and Shawn co-wrote and had major starring roles. Miramax boss Jonathan Glickman spoke about getting that family back together when it came to getting this project off the ground.
“We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise. The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences around the world.”
The Wayans Brothers Turned Scary Movie Into a Major Hit
Scary Movie was a massive success during the summer of 2000, grossing $278 million worldwide on a $19 million budget. At the time, its $42.5 million opening was the biggest opening for an R-rated horror movie and the best debut for a black filmmaker at the box office. A sequel was quickly greenlit, with Scary Movie 2 releasing in 2001, and although it wasn’t as financially successful, grossing $141.2 million globally on a $45 million budget. A third film was put into development, with The Wayans brothers thinking they would be involved. That sadly turned out to not be the case, in the most underhanded of ways.

Marlon recently revealed that the third movie and the franchise were taken from them by Harvey and Bob Weinstein, despite using their idea for the film. The Wayans pitched a concept for the third movie, with Marlon saying, “They go, ‘We love it. We’re going to make an offer.” However, when that offer was made, it was for the same amount they earned on the first two movies, despite their financial success. The brothers passed after being low-balled but were very surprised when Scary Movie 3 was released, directed by David Zucker and a new writing team, that it was the very idea they pitched to them.
“All the toxic things that you did to me and my family, when you took the franchise from us, and gave it to somebody else because we couldn’t make a deal. So, they gave it to somebody else, and they didn’t tell us. We read about it in the papers.”
Across five movies, the Scary Movie franchise has grossed over $896 million worldwide and even though the Wayans brothers weren’t involved in films three through five, it’s great that this new opportunity allows them to reclaim what was there and make it fresh again. Sometimes it takes time for wrongs to be righted, and this one was a long time in the making. In a statement, the Wayans crew sounds excited to be reunited for this project and also look forward to starting this journey with the new Miramax.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new

and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”
