The Substance Star Margaret Qualley to Lead New Horror Film From Longlegs Producer

Margaret Qualley had several exciting roles in 2024 but nothing compared to the body horror The Substance. As the film received critical acclaim, Qualley couldn’t stay away from the genre too long and has secured another role.

Per Deadline, Margaret Qualley will team up with Longlegs producer Dan Kagan for the upcoming psychological horror Victorian Psycho. Anton will launch the upcoming gothic horror at next week’s American Film Market. Qualley (Maid, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood) has multiple roles lined up but, following the acclaim and Oscar buzz around The Substance, going back to horror is a win.

The cast for Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2 continues to come together, with new additions including an AEW wrestler and one of the stars of The Substance.

The official log reads, “Set in 1858, the film will follow a young, eccentric governess named Winifred Notty (Qualley) who arrives at the remote gothic manor known as Ensor House. Winifred’s responsibilities include teaching the children table manners and educating them about their family’s history, all whilst hiding her psychopathic tendencies. As Winifred assimilates into life at Ensor House, staff members begin to inexplicably disappear, and the owners of the estate begin to wonder if there is something amiss about their new governess.”

Victorian Psycho will have Zachary Wigon at the helm, reuniting with Qualley again after 2022’s Sanctuary. The script comes from Mrs. March author Virginia Feito, based on her upcoming novel of the same name, which is expected to be published on Feb. 4, 2025. Longlegs producer Dan Kagan will produce under his Traffic company alongside Sebastien Raybaud and Wigon. Filming is expected to start in March 2025.

“Working with Zach [Wigon] again feels like a rare gift, and I can’t wait to step into this twisted world he’s created,” Qualley said in a statement.

“As soon as I discovered this thoroughly insane and unforgettable character, I knew I had to introduce moviegoers to Winifred Notty,” Wigon noted. “I am beyond thrilled that the utterly fearless Margaret Qualley will be bringing this complex antihero to vivid life. Virginia Feito’s screenplay is an audacious blend of psychodrama, satire, gore and mystery. With horror aficionado producer Dan Kagan and the support of Anton and Anonymous, I cannot wait to make Victorian Psycho.”

The Substance Was a Major Success

The body horror The Substance has been very well received. With a Certified Fresh rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 73% from the audience, the horror is a hit. The Coralie Fargeat-directed film stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, following Elisabeth Sparkle, a renowned aerobics star who gets fired on her 50th birthday. This leads to a laboratory to offer her a substance that will allow her to transform into a younger version of herself.

The new installment in the Terrifier franchise is a major success.

With an estimated budget of $17.5 million, the film was a commercial success, as it made $35 million at the box office, despite its limited release. Although much of the praise focuses on Moore’s performance in a role unlike any other, Qualley was equally powerful and her new role in Victorian Psycho.

The Substance will make its streaming video-on-demand debut on Mubi on Oct. 31. Victorian Psycho doesn’t have a release date.
