World Bank: Karnataka Requests Rs 5,000 Crore from World Bank for Disaster Resilience and Infrastructure Enhancement |

Bengaluru: To enhance the reputation of Bengaluru as a IT-BT destination while addressing its vulnerability to natural disasters, the govt has formally approached the World Bank for financial assistance. The proposal, titled ‘Disaster Resilience Initiative’, aims to secure Rs 5,000 crore to bolster infrastructure.
While divulging details, finance department officials suggested that a major chunk of the fund would be used to improve infrastructure in Bengaluru while a portion would go to other disaster-prone cities, including Belagavi and Mangaluru. Sources say the funding request is divided into two segments: Rs 3,500 crore for Bengaluru and Rs 1,500 crore for other cities in the state.
“We have posted the proposal to the World Bank. Of the Rs 3,500 crore for Bengaluru, Rs 2,500 crore will go to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the rest to Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB),” said a senior govt official.
The proposed allocation for BBMP will be mostly used to “remodel and modernise” stormwater drains, which govt sources say have been “untouched” for two decades and require immediate intervention. “Many of these drains have fallen into disrepair, exacerbating the city’s risk of flooding,” the official said.
The state plans to invest in establishing new sewage treatment plants, addressing a critical need for modern sanitation infrastructure. “We are also looking at certain reform measures in both these city agencies,” the finance department official said.
The project has reportedly received “in-principle” approval from the World Bank, with final approval expected by February 2025. “The govt is working on project details,” said LK Atheeq, finance department secretary.
This ambitious plan for Bengaluru is part of a larger Rs 1.3 lakh crore plan devised by the state govt. Officials assert that these investments are “designed to improve the quality of life and attract further private sector participation, foster innovation, and position Bangalore as a global hub for business and technology”.
