Jason Clare says he asked for free Qantas flight upgrade

Education Minister Jason Clare says he received a complimentary flight upgrade after requesting it from Qantas staff when travelling in a personal capacity from Sydney to Singapore in 2019.

Questioned on Sky News about how the upgrade took place, Clare said he had “probably” contacted the airline’s government relations team to ask for assistance after receiving surgery.

“I had to go into hospital. You might remember that I had a melanoma on the leg. I had to get cut out. My family were overseas. I caught up with them as soon as I was allowed.”

Clare’s admission to receiving a free Qantas flight upgrade follows allegations in former Rear Window columnist Joe Aston’s new book The Chairman’s Lounge that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had solicited free flight upgrades from the airline.

Clare said only he, not his family, had received the upgrade for personal travel.
