Skaneateles football defeats Canastota in sectionals

No. 4 Skaneateles football scored 14 fourth-quarter points on Friday to come away with a 35-32 victory over No. 5 Canastota in the Section III, Class C quarterfinals at home.

The Lakers headed into the final quarter down five, but held the Raiders to 6 points in the fourth to secure the win.

Torin Bennett paced Skaneateles on offense with 16 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns, while also coming up big on defense with one interception, one sack and seven tackles.

Quarterback Hugh Carroll also did major damage with his legs, rushing for 127 yards and two scores on 14 attempts. Through the air, the signal caller completed 13 of his 21 passes for 198 yards. On defense, the junior had an interception to boot. 

Reid Danforth was the Lakers’ leading receiver with four catches for 116 yards and one touchdown, while adding the team’s third interception of the game.

Brady Ellis racked up seven tackles and caught five passes for 60 yards. Teague Foley was successful on all five of his extra-point attempts to propel the Lakers to the 3-point victory. 

Skaneateles now advances to the semifinals, where it will take on No. 1 General Brown. The Lions sit at 9-0 after defeating Marcellus in the quarterfinals on Friday.

No. 3 West Canada Valley 48, No. 6 Weedsport 8: The Wolverines were scoreless for the first three quarters on Friday in their road loss in the Section III 8-man quarterfinals. Weedsport concludes the 2024 season with a 3-5 record.
