Pensioners Demand Medical Allowance and Travel Concessions Amid Government Neglect | Guwahati News

Guwahati: The co-ordination committee of central govt pensioners’ association on Monday pointed out a list of challenges they face pertaining to medical treatment allowances, travel concessions and more.
The members expressed frustration that despite informing the govt about the issues, their pleas remain neglected. They added that to further pursue their demands, members from different parts of India will gather to protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Nov 13.
The committee’s general secretary, Sajer Rahman, said govt is currently focused on merging the Central Government Health Card (CGHC) with the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA). However, he believes this is a poor decision, as it would limit the benefits to only a select few pensioners rather than all.
“Despite spending a large amount of money, only few pensioners receive satisfactory services under the schemes. They have to spend their own money on treatments even with the presence of these schemes. Additionally, claims under the scheme often remain pending for months or years due to administrative delays,” Rahman added.
Emphasising the hike in the fixed medical allowance for pensioners, the members highlighted that the need for proper implementation of the increased fixed medical allowance. “ Despite the orders of the Supreme Court regarding the increase of the allowance from Rs 1000 to Rs 3000, most of the pensioners have not received the benefit. We urge govt to look into it and ensure effective implementation,” Rahman said.
The lack of wellness centres and proper medical services was another issue addressed by the committee. Highlighting their list of demands, the members emphasised that every district in the state should have wellness centers under the CGHS, equipped with proper and sufficient medical services for pensioners, including those who worked for banks or autonomous statutory bodies.
Apart from the medical issue, the committee also raised demands for reinstatement on travel concession for pensioners along with the abolishment of new pension scheme.
