Farida seeks more UN supports for Bangladesh’s sustainable development 

DHAKA, Nov 6, 2024 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter has sought more support in livestock and fisheries, environment and agriculture sectors from the stakeholders including the United Nations (UN) to ensure Bangladesh’s financial and sustainable development.

“The stakeholders including the UN can provide supports to the government to ensure Bangladesh’s sustainable development,” she said.

She made the appeal when the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Gwyn Lewis paid a courtesy call on her at the latter’s Secretariat office here today.

During the meeting, they have discussed about the UN cooperation needs to different sectors on ‘One Health’ and ‘Blue Economy’, said a ministry press release.  

Gwyn Lewis said Bangladesh has become a role model in ‘One Health’ in this region by taking various pragmatic measures. 

She assured of increasing cooperation to Bangladesh as Farida Akhter sought support from the UN organizations for Bangladesh’s sustainable development. 

  

The UN resident coordinator said Bangladesh is now at risk of zoonotic diseases (an infectious disease of humans caused by a pathogen like Ebola and HIV) to be spread by the animals and birds as the country has a vast land boundary with India and Myanmar.

Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Sayeed Mahmood Belal Haider, additional secretary ATM Mostofa Kamal, UN Senior Human Rights Adviser to Bangladesh Huma Khan, among others, were present.
