The Jazz Room in Waterloo will be alive with the sound of music this weekend, all in support of a great cause.
A fundraiser is being held on Sunday to help connect kids with music lessons in Waterloo Region.
“Music should be accessible to anybody who is interested in participating,” said Danielle Beck, coordinator with the KW Kiwanis Music Festival.
Beck was on The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NewsRadio on Wednesday and said unfortunately, not every child can afford to learn music.
“We’re really trying to address that problem,” explained Beck. “So we’re looking to fund music lessons for kids who are maybe experiencing some financial hardship, and maybe don’t have access to good quality music lessons.”
Beck said learning music has social, cognitive, and emotional benefits for kids.
She also knows firsthand how important accessibility can be, because she has a childhood connection to the cause.
“I really identify with these kids because I was one of those kids,” said Beck. “I was a kid that was really excited about music right from the beginning and I really, really wanted to take music lessons but we couldn’t always afford it.”
Beck said she was only able to take music lessons because of bursary programs and she wants to pay it forward.
The proceeds from Sunday’s fundraiser benefit KW Kiwanis’ Music Education Fund. The event is happening from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature both student and professional performers, plus a silent auction.
