Tsakani – Celinhlahla ‘Thami Durbz’ Nzuza (32) is an Aafro-pop artist who was born and raised in KwaZulu Natal (eHluhluwe Emdletsheni) but currently resides in Tsakani.
He said growing up in an environment that was musically orientated inspired him to be the artist that he is today, saying his upbringing inspired him to lean towards the African sounds like Mbhaqanga and Afro-soul.
“I grew up in a place where music formed part of therapeutic practice. There was a professional Zulu dance tournament annually known as Ingoma, where my grandmother was a the chorus singer.
“My mother bought and listened to a lot of music cassettes. She always had the latest cassettes of artists who were booming back then such as Zola 7, Hlanganani, Mgqumeni and many more,” he said.
Nzuza said his love for music stems from being exposed to a variety of music genres and art forms, citing that his challenges have been huge motivation towards his creation of music.

“My parents broke up when I was very young, therefore I was mainly raised by my grandmother. My grandmother and I had to constantly relocate due to conflicts that occurred between our families.
“My grandmother was a traditional Zulu lady who always had harmonies echoing whenever she was busy with chores. I could tell by the type of songs she sang when she was angry.
“I guess a part of me was partly inspired by that experience. Although there are quite a number of sources of inspiration, for example, my grandmother and I would always relocate to villages where culture and traditions were the same as the ones we were used to,” mentioned Nzuza.
He said he started recording his own songs in 2012, at his cousin’s room as he had recording equipment. After his session with his cousin he then booked his first professional studio session in Durban where he recorded his first high-quality songs.

“I have been making music ever since. I have gained experience and managed to work with numerous artists as well.
“Some of my songs have had the privilege to form part of radio playlists on stations like uMhlobo Wenene, UJ FM and Gagasi FM, and have also been played on television music channels like MTV Base, Mzansi Magic Music, Soweto TV and Trace Africa,” added Nzuza.
Nzuza released a single titled Zithande, last year, which was well received, mostly on music TV channels .
“I also released an EP titled Isimemo which is available on all digital platforms. I am currently preparing to drop a single but I am not yet prepared to announce the title of the song but it will be dropped just before the end of November.
“Music is what I am truly gifted with. It gives me a chance to share my creative mind with super-talented artists. My aim is to put an end to the stigma that comes from labelling village kids like me,” concluded Nuza.
