Nintendo Reveals Frustrating Release Update on Live-Action The Legend of Zelda Movie
Nintendo has shared an update on the upcoming feature film based on The Legend of Zelda. The good news is that a release window has been confirmed, but it could still potentially take five years for fans to see the movie.
In a new financial report from Nintendo (per IGN), the “Visual Content” data lists the upcoming releases of the two confirmed upcoming films based on the video game titan’s characters. Along with naming the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, the upcoming sequel is also noted to be coming out in 2026, as previously announced. Notably, the Legend of Zelda movie is also listed with a release set for “202X.” This confirms that the film will be out sometime this decade, but it could be as late as 2029.

Looking Back at The Nintendo DS, 20 Years Later
The Nintendo DS was originally intended to complement the Game Boy Advance, but it quickly became immensely popular in its own right.
“In the field of visual content, we are making direct investments and are deeply involved in the planning and development of multiple productions,” said Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa about the upcoming films. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a joint production with Illumination, was released in April last year and was viewed in theaters by approximately 170 million people. This film was enjoyed by people of all ages worldwide, regardless of gaming experience, making Mario more familiar to a broader audience than ever before.”

The Legend of Zelda series holds a special place in the hearts of many, but not every Zelda title gets the respect it deserves.
It was announced in 2023 after the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie that The Legend of Zelda would also be adapted into a feature film. However, the Zelda movie will be in live-action rather than animation. Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) is on board to direct the movie, while Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto will produce alongside Avi Arad. The project doesn’t seem to have since made much traction and no casting announcements have been made, leaving it still unclear who may be playing the live-action versions of characters like Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf.
Wes Ball Plans to Make “Something Special” With the Zelda Movie
“I can’t really say anything,” Ball told CBR in April about the Zelda film. “I’ve learned in the past that anything I say gets sort of taken out of context. It’s probably safer that I say nothing until we have something to say, which I’m sure will come at some point. But obviously, I’m very thrilled and happy to be a part of this thing. It’s been a [lifelong] dream for me, basically… to be part of a Legend of Zelda movie. It’s amazing. So, we’re going to work hard and do something special.”
The official release date has not yet been set for the Legend of Zelda film.
