China Film Pavilion at AFM Collaborations and Global Partnerships
China Film Pavilion will play a prominent role in highlighting the strength of China’s film industry at the 45th annual American Film Market (AFM) in Las Vegas, held this year from Nov. 5 to Nov 10. During the event, the Pavilion, which is organized by China Film Co-Production Corporation (CFCC) of China Film Group Corporation, will present a variety of films and institutions and aim to enhance international exchange, foster cooperation and promote the global trade of Chinese films.
Each year, the AFM, widely regarded as one of the world’s most significant platforms for film trading, gathers thousands of industry professionals from over 80 countries to engage in discussions about copyright trading, financing deals and film screenings. This year marks China Film Pavilion’s second appearance at AFM.
The return reflects China’s commitment to showcasing the diversity and innovation of its film industry. “The goal is not only to promote international trade of domestic films but also to encourage resource-sharing and collaboration across global markets,” a CFCC spokesperson says. “In the future, China Film Pavilion plans to continue expanding opportunities for Chinese filmmakers to engage with the international community and bring more Chinese films to audiences worldwide.”
More than 50 Chinese film companies and institutions cover areas such as film production, copyright management, marketing, distribution, theater operations, talent development and film festivals. “The global film industry is currently facing new challenges and opportunities, making communication more important for everyone,” a representative from an exhibiting company says. “By participating in China Film Pavilion, we hope to engage in in-depth exchanges with our international counterparts, establish a comprehensive and stable cooperation network, and foster the integrated development of Chinese and global cinema.”
Exhibitors include China Film Co., Ltd., Hua Xia Film Distribution Co., Ltd., Shanghai Film Group, Pearl River Film Group, Xiao Xiang Pictures, Bona Film Group, CMC Pictures, iQIYI, Lian Ray Pictures, China Film Archive, China Film Foundation, Beijing Film Academy, Shanghai International Film Festival, Beijing International Film Festival.
“The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru”
Chinese films continue to garner significant interest from international audiences. “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru,” which represented China in the 97th Academy Awards, has been screened in many cities in the U.K., attracting widespread attention from global media and audiences. “The Volunteers: To the War II,” which premiered on China’s National Day this October, grossed $112 million in its opening week and reshaped international perceptions of the Chinese film market’s potential. Additionally, the successful re-release of the “Harry Potter” series in China further fueled global expectations for the Chinese market.
This year, China Film Pavilion brought more than 200 films to AFM. Among them are works that have performed well in the domestic market as well as highly anticipated unreleased projects. These include films rooted in Chinese culture and aesthetics like “Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants,” “A Tapestry of a Legendary Land” and “White Snake: Afloat” as well as more contemporary films like “Gold or Shit,” “Herstory” and “Moments We Shared.” Animations such as “Into the Mortal World,” “Boonie Bears: Time Twist” and “I Am What I Am” along with documentaries like “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru,” “The Yangtze River” and “Kangxi and Louis XIV.”
Before this year’s AFM officially began, many exhibitors received inquiries and scheduled meetings with international partners. On the event’s opening day, discussions were already underway regarding film prices, copyright terms and cross-border collaboration, with preliminary agreements reached on several projects.
Throughout the six-day event, the China Film Pavilion will provide themed booklets about recent developments in the Chinese film market, address visitors’ inquiries on film imports and co-production policies, and connect foreign filmmakers with potential Chinese partners. Exhibitors and filmmakers from Chinese film companies will also hold productive discussions with exhibitors and filmmakers from other countries and regions and open new avenues for international collaboration and exchange.
