India presented its free e-visa initiative, Chalo India, at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2024 expo in London, aimed at attracting more international visitors.

Mugdha Sinha, Director-General of India’s tourism ministry, encouraged the global Indian diaspora to promote the scheme.

India welcomed 9.5 million tourists in 2023, with the UK as the third-largest inbound market, contributing 920,000 visitors.

“We are marketing India as a destination for all seasons,” Sinha added, noting infrastructure developments over the past 10 years such as more roads, airports and direct flights to more regions.

She emphasized India’s diverse attractions, including its coastline, mountains, wildlife sanctuaries, and sustainable travel options. The country has developed 150 new eco-friendly destinations and relaunched the Incredible India hub to enhance booking options.

More information on India’s free e-visa initiative is available on the Chalo India portal.

State representatives, including from Odisha, Goa, and Telangana, also highlighted their unique tourism offerings. Goa, for example, attracts 15 million tourists annually, while Odisha boasts 64 tribes and unique cultural festivals.

WTM London 2024 will run until Thursday, November 7.
