Nashville gets ‘Shucked’ as hilariously corny musical hits TPAC
The Tony Award-winning musical “Shucked,” made its Nashville debut Nov. 5 at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. The show, set in a cornfield in rural Cob County, features music and lyrics written by the Grammy Award-winning Nashville songwriting team of Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally.
After ending its run on Broadway in New York City and beginning its U.S. tour in Nashville, “Shucked” received a thunderous standing ovation at the end of Wednesday night’s show. Based on the book by Robert Horn, the show packs a hilarious punch, delivers more corn puns than anyone ever thought existed and is brilliantly performed by an amazing cast of well-developed characters.
Clark and McAnally were both on hand Wednesday night along with other music industry celebs such as Walker Hayes and Matthew Ramsey from Old Dominion.
‘Shucked’ is about corn, and so much more
The storyline is based on a small-town community that relies on (and revolves around) its corn crops. When the crop mysteriously starts dying, the cast scrambles to find a solution and the result is a plot that far transcends being about corn.
The brilliance of “Shucked” is its ability to deliver a heartfelt storyline that never misses an opportunity to make the audience laugh. It also manages to poke fun at southerners and their accents without ever becoming insulting. It’s more like a “we’re laughing with you, not at you” scenario.
Main character “Maizy,” played by Danielle Wade, who the audience learns is named after (wait for it) her grandmother, decides to be the first to up and leave her small town to go find help for the community’s corn problem. What ensues is a hilarious bashing of the city of Tampa, where Maizy says “You’ll always find an old person to get in your way.”
Maizy returns with “Gordy,” a scoundrel out for money under the premise of helping the town get its corn growing again. There’s a love triangle, a stunning performance of the strong, independent character “Lulu” played by Miki Abraham and a plot twist nobody saw coming.
In 2023, “Shucked” earned nine Tony Awards nominations, and actor Alex Newell, who played Lulu, won Best Featured Actor in a Musical. The musical also earned 12 Drama Desk Awards nominations and won two: Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, who wrote the musical’s lyrics and music, won Outstanding Music and Newell won Outstanding Featured Performance in a Musical.
