Air pollution is indeed deadly, posing one of the greatest global health threats today. With harmful pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide saturating the air, millions of people are exposed to invisible toxins every day. Speaking of the pollution, Lahore(Pakistan) recorded an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of 1,165 on Wednesday, as per Swiss air quality monitoring group IQAir, which aggregates data from 14 regional monitoring stations. This level is over 120 times higher than the air quality standards recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Lahore, the capital of Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab, lies just 25 kilometers (16 miles) from the Indian border and is known as the cultural heart of the country. On Saturday morning, the city recorded an alarmingly high Air Quality Index (AQI) of 1,067, according to ARY News, maintaining its position as the city with the most hazardous air quality globally.

As per the ARY news report, Smog in Lahore is causing severe health issues for residents, who report experiencing breathing difficulties, coughing, and burning eyes.

The Punjab government in Pakistan has announced the closure of primary schools in Lahore for one week due to worsening smog and deteriorating air quality in the city, ARY News reported on Sunday. Schools will be closed from November 4 to November 9, as per a notification from the Punjab Environment Department.

Senior provincial minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stressed the importance of prioritising the health and safety of students amid the ongoing air pollution crisis. The decision comes as Lahore struggles with alarmingly high levels of air pollution, which have severely impacted residents’ health, particularly that of children. The city has consistently ranked among the most polluted globally, prompting urgent measures from authorities, ARY News reported.
