Vermont filmmaker launches fundraising campaign for new horror-comedy | Arts And Culture

BRATTLEBORO — Vermont filmmaker Austin Rice, an active figure in the state’s film scene and lead producer at Brattleboro Community TV, is launching a fundraising campaign to support his latest project; “Nightmare at Nana’s,” a Vermont-based horror-comedy film set to begin shooting next summer.

When two brothers are stranded in the Vermont woods, they take refuge with a kind elderly woman, only to discover a psychopath is stalking them. This new project is a nostalgic tribute to ’80s genre films, blending classic horror elements with comedy and Vermont’s charm.

To kick off the production of this love letter to both the horror genre and the beauty of Vermont, Rice and his production team are hosting a series of free community events aimed at involving local residents in the fundraising process. These events will include live script readings, screenings and Q&A sessions, creating an opportunity for the community to connect with the project and support its development.

“As a proud Vermonter, and passionate filmmaker, I strive to create projects that showcase our state’s beauty, engage the community in the creative process, and represent our sense of individuality,” said Austin Rice, writer, director and producer of the film. “I am thrilled to make a campy horror film with so many talented locals among the crew and cast. I couldn’t have gotten to where I am in my career without the support of my neighbors, mentors and friends in the Brattleboro area, and I am excited to invite the community to help us bring this feature film to life.”

Upcoming fundraising events are:

  • 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at 118 Elliot in Brattleboro, when attendees will enjoy live readings from the script, view clips from past projects and meet the cast and crew.
  • 7 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Hooker-Dunham Theater, with a screening of the “Lil’ Balzac” films. Donations will go directly toward funding the project.
