Staying true to its garage band, er, winery roots, a Napa Valley winery recently paired up its fall vintages with music.
James Harder started Tank Garage Winery in an old Calistoga gas station so it’s fitting that Tank issued a play list for its recent releases. “We’re a Napa winery starting out of a garage so let’s act more like a garage band, and we pursue what interests us, what piques our curiosity,” Harder says.
Music is at the center of what Tank does, Harder says. “Music has always been at the heart of our storytelling,” he says. “70s punk, 80s rock, and 90s hip hop fuels our creativity and drives our winemaking.”
So Harder and his team came up with a play list for four of their fall vintages.
The team at Tank might be onto something. Charles Spence, a professor in experimental psychology at Oxford University, matched wine tastes with the pitch and tempo of different music. He discovered that people can enjoy wine 15 percent more by simultaneously drinking and listening to the right kind of music. He generally found that people want to match outside sensations to taste.
As such, Tank Garage came up with their own list of perfect pleasures to sip their wines to.
Arcade Summer, a skin-contact Albariño or orange wine is paired with Electric Warrior by T. Rex. “Both this wine and this album take you back to the 1970s,” Harder says. “Orange wines are known for their experimental nature, and unique, complex flavors, similarly Electric Warrior is a sonic adventure with Marc Bolan’s distinctive vocals and the band’s raw, electrifying sound. They both dare to be different and leave a lasting impression.” Though its name might “scream summer fun,” Harder says it is perfect to cozy up inside and sip.
Beach Freaks – 46% Gewürtzaminer, 39% Grüner Vetliner, and 15% Riesling – white wine is paired with Malibu by Anderson .Paak.“Pairing this album with the aromatic and lively Beach Freaks encapsulates the vibrant energy and soulful sounds of a vintage or contemporary Southern California,” Harder says. “While the album might evoke carefree summer days, its introspective lyrics and soulful melodies also resonate with fall’s expressive and nostalgic mood.” Listen on a cool evening by a beach bonfire while sipping the deep flavors of baked pear, cinnamon and a lingering salinity, he says.
“Music is always on in our cellar, loud and proud,” says Bertus van Zyl, lead winemaker at Tank Garage Winery. “Our neighbor calls once a week to say the walls between us are shaking and asking if we can we turn it down a bit. We love it, it adds so much inspiration and energy to what we do.”
Lip Service, a rockstar blend of 58% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Zinfandel, and 7% Petit Verdot , is paired up with Fetch the Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple. “This album’s raw, percussive sound and Apple’s fierce vocals create an exhilarating and cathartic listening experience,” Harder says. “It complements the bold flavors and structure of a luscious Napa Valley Bordeaux blend, inviting you to savor each sip and note.” The album’s rhythms fit the change in seasons, he says.
Onde Nostre, a blend of Barbera, Sangiovese and Freise grapes, is is a love letter to surfing and to Italian-style wines. As such, it is paired with The Bradipos IV by The Bradipos IV. “Italian band, The Bradipos IV embodies the raw energy and instrumental prowess of Surf Rock, making them the most dynamic pairing for Tank’s newest Cal-Ital blend with a surf subculture theme, Onde Nostre,” Harder says. “Pop on this album, and pair Onde Nostre with an Italian feast fit for chillier evenings.”
