Babygirl star Nicole Kidman Would Love To Make a Movie With Martin Scorsese
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Nicole Kidman was asked if there were any directors she’d love to work with that she hadn’t worked with already. The actress listed several names, including Paul Thomas Anderson, Spike Jonze, and Kathryn Bigelow, but one particular name mentioned by Kidman may have come with a little bit of shade.
I’ve always said I want to work with [Martin] Scorsese, if he does a film with women.
This is likely in reference to Scorsese’s penchant for making films mostly about (and even arguably for) men, a criticism of his work that made headlines in 2019 when the director stated he didn’t “have time anymore” to write for women.
Scorsese and his fans point to several titles in the filmmaker’s large body of work that feature strong roles for women, namely Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, one of only a few titles to feature a woman as the protagonist. Other films mentioned are The Age of Innocence, with starring turns for both Michelle Pfeifer and Winona Ryder, and Casino, Scorsese’s Las Vegas epic featuring Sharon Stone in an Oscar-winning performance.
The director has also seemingly course-corrected since making his comments in 2019. He helmed the 2023 film Killers of the Flower Moon, which, despite starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, saw Lily Gladstone’s performance as Mollie lead to a history-making Oscar nomination when she became the first Native American woman to receive a best actress nod.
Still, those examples are drops in a bucket compared to the vast ocean of pictures dominated mainly by male characters and perspectives. Perhaps there will be a meaty role for Kidman in a future Scorsese project, but it likely won’t come in the form of a film primarily about women.
Kidman Discusses ‘Babygirl’ And Opens Up About Losing Her Mother
The bulk of the Vanity Fair interview focuses on other matters in Kidman’s life, namely her appearance in the upcoming erotic drama Babygirl, set for release on Christmas Day. She has already won the Venice Film Festival’s Volpi Cup for best actress, and her performance is on the list of early Oscar contenders.
Kidman also opened up about losing her mother, Janelle Ann, who passed away before the actress could accept her award in Venice. When asked what her mother meant to her career, Kidman stated:
She was my compass in a way. It’s like losing that, but at the same time going, Okay, well, this is for her then. So much of what she wanted for my sister and I was to create women in this world who felt like they could express themselves and have opportunities, especially things she didn’t have from her generation. She loved my career, she really did. She would be there through all the ups and downs, all of it. Her essence has been pretty much the driving force through my whole life. I wish she could have seen this part of it.
