‘Werewolves’ Star Teases Horror Movie’s ‘Unbelievable’ Practical Effects
While Universal’s Wolf Man might be the most anticipated werewolf movie in recent memory, don’t sleep on Werewolves, the new action-horror film from director Steven C. Miller that’s set to release on Dec. 6. Described by star Frank Grillo as “The Purge meets werewolves,” the movie takes things old school, utilizing practical effects to their full advantage at a time when everything seems to be done with CGI. Also featuring Lou Diamond Phillips, it’s those practical effects that he recently teased as being “unbelievable” in a new interview with MovieWeb earlier this week.
Phillips stars alongside Grillo as Dr. Aranda in Werewolves, which sees a latent gene in the population triggered to transform everyone into bloodthirsty creatures when they come into contact with light from a supermoon. Currently starring in director James C. Clayton’s Get Fast, we spoke to Phillips about the new werewolf flick, which he called “a crowd pleaser.” He took the time to highlight each directors’ commitment to practical effects, while also teasing what fans can expect from the upcoming horror movie.

Why Joe Dante’s The Howling is the Best Werewolf Movie of the ‘80s
The horror classic finds the perfect balance of satire, self-referential humor, and effective scares. Here’s why The Howling is the best.
“Steven C. Miller and James C. Clayton – and I wonder if the C stands for the same thing, it’s probably cool – they’re cut from the same cloth.
These are guys who love movies, and I love that
. I cannot stand people in the business who are there because they want to make widgets, or that they’re bean counters or whatever. People who love movies, who make movies, that means a lot to me.“Being on a set like Get Fast where everything was kind of George Miller and Mad Max and real, and the same thing with Steven C. Miller on Werewolves,
the practical effects are unbelievable
. Those are stunt guys, sweating their nuts off in Puerto Rico making that movie, and it’s embellished a little with CGI, but once again, Steven C. Miller, a guy with a plan who goes in, who executes it, knows what he wants, and makes it happen. It’s a joy to work with directors like that.”
‘Werewolves’ Is Getting a Wide Release
While it’s commonplace these days for a movie like Werewolves to debut on just a few screens and then head straight to streaming a few weeks later, such is not the case with Miller’s film. Horror lovers will be pleased to know that it’s getting a wide release courtesy of Briarcliff Entertainment, a fact that was confirmed by the director on X yesterday. When asked by a distraught fan who thought the movie wouldn’t be coming to the East Coast, Miller replied:
It totally is. It’s going wide. Theater showtimes and advance tickets will go on sale Nov 22nd.
That’s great news for werewolf lovers, as the beasts have been few and far between on the big screen lately, so to see them getting some love bodes well for the future, and for smaller films that aren’t distributed by big Hollywood studios like Universal. The more movies like Werewolves are treated with the same respect that their big-budget counterparts are, the better it is for the industry, theater chains, and the fans who clamor to see indie films on a bigger scale, rather than having to wait to watch them at home.
