World Bank approves $250mln loan for Morocco’s waste management overhaul
The World Bank has approved a $250 million loan to support Morocco’s efforts to improve its municipal solid waste management system.
The funds will be used to modernize landfills, expand waste recycling, and close down old, uncontrolled dump sites.
The government has identified solid waste management as a key priority, especially since over 60% of Morocco’s population resides in urban areas.
Recent years have seen some progress, with waste collection rates soaring from 40% to 96% since 2008. However, environmental and financial constraints persist.
This World Bank-backed program is set to tackle these issues head-on. The program includes actions like modernizing existing landfills, increasing recycling through sustainable business models, cleaning up abandoned landfills, finding new ways to generate income for the waste management sector, and tracking greenhouse gas emissions to meet international climate change agreements.
The program aligns with Morocco’s border environmental goals by prioritizing sustainable practices like waste reduction and recovery.
In 2023, Morocco introduced a new national program to improve waste management. This program focuses on sustainability by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and increasing recycling efforts.
The World Bank is supporting this new program by improving the performance of the waste management sector, including financial health and environmental impact.
Morocco has been facing a growing waste management challenge, particularly in urban areas. The country generates large amounts of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), Industrial Waste, and Hazardous Waste.
The problem is exacerbated by the the rapid urbanization and population growth in major cities like Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh.
The Moroccan government has put in place several strategies to improve waste management. The National Strategy for Waste Management (2020-2030) seeks to enhance waste collection, recycling rates and reduce landfill waste.
The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy holds manufacturers accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products, including disposal. while the Green Morocco Plan promotes sustainable waste management practices, particularly for organic waste, and encourages waste-to-energy projects.
