Russian scientists developing prototype for light-speed computer powered by photonics, AI
MOSCOW, 29th November, 2024 (WAM) — Scientists from the National Center for Physics and Mathematics (NCPM) in the Russian Federation are working on developing a prototype of a computer that operates at the speed of light.
Alexander Sergeyev, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, explained that the system combines electronics and photonics for ultra-fast data processing, using artificial intelligence methods based on optical artificial neural networks. As a result, the computer’s processors will execute calculations and process data at the speed of light.
Sergeyev added that plans are underway to develop a functional prototype over the next two years for the world’s most powerful hybrid electronic-photonic computing system, capable of processing data at light speed.
He noted that the promising Russian photonic computing systems could significantly accelerate problem-solving, by 100-1000 times, while also improving energy efficiency compared to modern electronic computers with global processors and graphics accelerators developed by leading international companies.
