The president of United States, Joe Bidenannounced this Tuesday (3), during a speech in Luanda, Angola“new humanitarian aid of more than a billion dollars for Africans displaced by historic droughts” and affected, among other things, by hunger. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) clarified in a statement that this additional aid is intended to address food insecurity and other urgent needs of refugees and displaced people in 31 countries on the African continent.

This financing includes approximately 823 million dollars (almost R$5 billion) channeled through USAID and approximately 186 million (R$1.12 billion) managed by the State Department, according to the statement. Africa is the region “where the percentage of the population suffering from hunger is the highest”, highlights the text. Factors such as armed conflicts, extreme weather phenomena and natural disasters explain this serious situation.

The announcement of this aid demonstrates “once again our firm commitment to our African partners” to address the challenge of food insecurity, the statement said, urging other donors to contribute generously. In 2024, the United States has already allocated around 6.6 billion dollars (R$40 billion) in humanitarian aid to Sub-Saharan Africa, but USAID highlighted the need to raise more funds “to meet the critical and growing needs” of the region.
