Métier d’Art 2025 show in China

Chanel took its distinctive aesthetic to China this week, staging its latest presentation on the shores of the celebrated West Lake in Hangzhou at dusk. But its Métier d’Art collection wasn’t just a showcase for the highly recognisable house codes, from tweed suits and quilting to chains and camellias, but for the aesthetic language of its host city.

Hangzhou, in the east of the country, lies at the heart of the traditional silk industry, and the beauty of its lake has long been memorialised by artists and poets. It is also now home to a number of major Chinese companies, most notably Alibaba, the biggest e-commerce group.

Chanel chose to come here partly because, as is the case with most western luxury labels, the Chinese
