Assam proposes Rs. 25,000-Crore Guwahati-Umiam-Silchar Expressway to cut travel time to 4 hours

Guwahati, Dec 5: The Assam government has proposed a groundbreaking expressway project that could slash travel time between Guwahati and Silchar to just four hours, with a route passing through Umiam (Barapani) in Meghalaya. Currently under consideration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Rs. 25,000-crore initiative aims to revolutionize regional connectivity and boost economic growth.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking after a Cabinet meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, highlighted the project’s transformative potential. “This expressway will link Guwahati to Umiam and onward to Silchar, reducing travel time to four hours,” Sarma said. “Our vision is to facilitate same-day travel between Guwahati and Silchar, vastly improving road connectivity and efficiency.”

This expressway is part of a larger infrastructure push, with Rs. 1 lakh crore in projects expected to be announced by Prime Minister Modi at the Advantage Assam Summit in Guwahati this February, aimed at reshaping Assam’s infrastructure landscape and driving growth across various sectors.

“This highway will not only connect cities but also create new opportunities,” Sarma added. The route through Umiam, a popular tourist destination, is expected to enhance tourism and foster stronger business ties between Assam and Meghalaya.

Other major infrastructure projects in the pipeline include:

Bongaigaon Refinery Expansion to increase capacity by 5 million metric tonnes.
Namrup Fertilizer Plant Expansion (Rs. 10,000 crore) to boost agricultural output.
Guwahati Ring Road Project to ease urban traffic congestion.
Kaziranga Elevated Corridor to safeguard wildlife while improving transit.
Numaligarh-Gohpur Road Tunnel and Brahmaputra Bridge, connecting key areas like Morigaon and Darrang.
Two Satellite Townships in Jagiroad and Palasbari, costing Rs. 10,000 crore.
Additionally, a proposed Bhutan Rail Link aims to connect Guwahati with Gelephu, Bhutan, strengthening cross-border trade and tourism.

“Our discussions with the Prime Minister and central ministers have been highly productive, and we are optimistic about the future of Assam’s development,” Sarma concluded.

If approved, the Guwahati-Umiam-Silchar expressway could become a game-changer for the region, enhancing connectivity and unlocking new economic opportunities across Northeast India.
