Beauty Heroes: Chanel Sublimage

In 1921 Chanel launched its first beauty product, Chanel No5 perfume. The response was enormous and the perfume swiftly became one of the biggest-selling scents in the world. By 1924 the brand had released a make-up collection that included powders and lipsticks and in 1927 it launched a complete skincare range. This included 15 different products, such as the Crème de Beauté and the Luxe Multitasking Oil, which became an instant hit for its wearable texture and delicious jasmine scent (it was rereleased in 2017, so has clearly stood the test of time).

In the intervening decades Chanel has continued to be a skincare pioneer. The brand’s Sublimage range is the culmination of over two decades of research into the effects of circadian rhythms on skin. The research helped to reveal how important sleep is to the quality of skin, as it gives the cells a chance to repair free from pollution, UV rays and stress. With this information, Chanel has created a novel approach to skincare that enables the user to better appreciate the power of the hours of rest and improve the functionality of their night-time skincare regime.

The hero product of the Sublimage collection is L’Extrait de Nuit, a serum that uses vanilla from Madagascar and active ingredients like polyfractioned Vanilla planifolia and Himalayan swertia. The vanilla formula helps to limit the effects of free radicals, and also contains enzymes that the brand found helped to increase cell regeneration threefold in the participants of their 103-person study. Meanwhile the swertia, a herb that only blooms once every three years and is harvested by hand by the brand in Bhutan, helps to improve cell regeneration. In a reconstructed model of mature skin, Chanel found that 73 per cent of those who used L’Extrait de Nuit had experienced the repair of tissue.

L’Extrait de Nuit is made with an “oil-in-water formula” that has a super-soft, shimmery texture and, incidentally, also smells fantastic. The coolest part? This product is also made with sustainability in mind — it is refillable and the recyclable bottle can be replaced when you finish a batch.
