Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The final replenishment meeting of the International Development Association (IDA21) kicks off today in the vibrant city of Seoul, bringing together global leaders, policymakers, and development stakeholders to strengthen their commitment to tackling poverty and advancing sustainable development in the world’s poorest countries.

The IDA, which provides concessional financing to low-income nations, plays a vital role in helping these countries achieve economic growth, address pressing challenges, and meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This high-profile event marks a critical moment for the global community as it seeks to mobilize resources and reinforce international cooperation to overcome the unprecedented challenges faced by these nations.

During the meeting, key figures will take the stage to share their insights and strategies for addressing the multifaceted issues confronting low-income countries. Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, will highlight the importance of collective action in responding to the urgent challenges these nations face, while Axel van Trotsenburg, Senior Managing Director at the World Bank, will outline financial strategies to ensure that resources are effectively allocated to those in greatest need.

Sheku Sambadeen Sesay, Independent Co-Chair of IDA21, will stress the significance of this replenishment cycle as a driver of meaningful, long-term change. Kim Beomseok, First Vice Minister of Economy and Finance for the Republic of Korea, will offer insights into his country’s development journey and its ongoing commitment to fostering global development through strategic partnerships.

A special cultural component of the event will feature Emtithal Mahmoud, a renowned spoken-word poet and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, whose powerful performance will remind attendees of the human stories behind the statistics. Yeonah Kim, a talented violinist, will also grace the event, providing a moving musical backdrop to the discussions centered around resilience, hope, and global solidarity.

As the global economic landscape continues to evolve, with rising debt distress and increased vulnerability due to climate change and geopolitical tensions, the role of IDA in addressing these challenges has never been more critical. The discussions at this replenishment meeting will play a pivotal role in mobilizing the necessary resources to combat poverty, promote social inclusion, and foster economic resilience in low-income countries.

This year’s meeting theme, “Ending Poverty on a Livable Planet: Delivering Impact with Urgency and Ambition,” underscores IDA21’s commitment to investing in both people and the planet. The agenda highlights the significant external financing needs of the world’s most vulnerable nations, which continue to face disruptions from multiple crises that threaten lives, livelihoods, and progress toward the SDGs.

A major development at the meeting has been the announcement by the United Kingdom, which recently pledged a 40% increase in its contribution to IDA. The UK’s commitment has risen from £1.414 billion in IDA20 to £1.98 billion in IDA21. Anneliese Dodds, UK Minister for Development, emphasized that this increase would unlock billions in vital funding for economic growth and poverty reduction efforts, ultimately transforming lives in some of the world’s most vulnerable countries.

Norway has also made headlines with a significant pledge, committing to a 50% increase in its contribution to IDA compared to previous cycles. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre noted that this funding boost would support critical areas such as food security, agricultural development, and access to sustainable energy in low-income nations.

Similarly, Denmark announced a financial commitment of DKK 3.3 billion, a 40% increase from its previous contribution. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated Denmark’s strong commitment to achieving the SDGs and urged other nations to follow suit in addressing the most pressing global challenges.

As discussions continue in Seoul, the outcomes of the IDA21 replenishment meeting are expected to resonate far beyond the conference halls. The resources mobilized here will directly impact policies and funding strategies that are crucial to improving the lives of millions in low-income countries. The collective actions taken during this meeting will strengthen the global movement for solidarity, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in overcoming the complex challenges of our time.

The IDA21 replenishment meeting is a crucial step in ensuring that the world’s poorest countries have the financial support they need to build a sustainable and resilient future. ZIJ/5/12/2024
