Nightbitch Star Amy Adams Names Which Beloved Werewolf Film Most Inspired Her Role

Amy Adams is back on the big screen in Nightbitch, a black comedy that’s based on the 2021 novel of the same name. With the movie now playing in theaters, Adams opened up about her role in the film in an interview with CBR’s Kevin Polowy.

Nightbitch stars Adams as a stay-at-home mother who has the ability to transform into a dog. Of course, the title alone is sure to capture attention, as it’s far unlike anything else that’s playing in theaters. Adams was asked if there were any concerns about keeping the unique title, but it was apparently not a big issue that came up during production. For her part, Adams also noted that she’s a big fan of the title of the movie.

The DCEU Is Over, but Amy Adams’ Lois Lane Is Still the Best Part of It

Though the DC Extended Universe had several controversial movies and casting choices, Amy Adams’ take on Lois Lane was always a high point.

“I hadn’t thought about [the title getting changed,” Adams said. “I love the title, and what it’s in reference to, in this sort of engaging and secret feral self. I love the title.”

The conversation also turned to the transformation Adams’ mother character has in the movie. She confirmed that there was a certain sense of improvisation she brought to her performance, though there were still measures taken to be sure Adams’ movements were “animalistic.” With that said, Adams also shared how it felt “very freeing” to act out her transformation.

How Universal Pioneered the Modern Werewolf Movie

The werewolf is deep-rooted in horror movie history, but it comes with the revelation that Universal shaped lycanthrope lore for over a century.

“I think working on this, there was always a sense of improv,” Adams said. “Working with dogs, and working with kids, there’s that sort of sense of immediacy, and this idea that you have to be present, and in those transformation moments, one of the things that Mari wanted to communicate was this idea of sort of feral freedom, and unleashing everything she’s been holding onto. That did allow for a lot of freedom. It wwas very specific, though, how they wanted me to go from standing, to running, to walking. We worked with a movement coach to sort of move more animalistic. Yeah, it was very freeing, and I think that’s what is happening for the character in those moments, so yeah, engaging in that sort of play.”

Amy Adams Confirms An American Werewolf in London Inspiration

Adams was also asked about her inspirations for the transformation scenes, such as whether she watched classic werewolf movies like The Wolf Man. She shared how she has always been a big fan of An American Werewolf in London, which is very well-known for its unforgettable werewolf transformation scenes.

“I mean, I haven’t thought about this, but An American Werewolf in London was one of my favorite movies growing up, which is horrible – it’s so violent,” Adams said. “The transformation was terrifying… I was very familiar with that, but I knew that we wouldn’t be showing sort of steps of the transformation in that way, but I was familiar with transformation movies in that way.”

Nightbitch was written and directed by Marielle Heller, and it is based on the original book by Rachel Yoder. Along with Amy Adams in the lead, the film also stars Scoot McNairy, Zoe Chao, Mary Holland, Ella Thomas, and Arleigh & Emmett Snowden.

Nightbitch is now in theaters.
