Sales of cars declined sharply in November 2024 with most leading automakers accounting for poor consumer demand

The month of November, generally speaking a lean month, saw a large number of automakers in India report lower retail sales. This is commonly a trend seen after the hectic festive and wedding seasons. Buyers also defer purchases as they await special year-end discounts and benefits offered by dealers in the month of December.

Maruti Suzuki, despite a significant decline in sales, once again led the segment by a huge margin. Hyundai, Mahindra and Tata saw a close contest. Toyota on the other hand, saw a rather notable improvement in its YoY sales performance.

Dealers pinned this decline in sales in Nov 2024 on various factors such as weak market sentiment, relatively lower new launches and a limited product range. Dealers also face constraints in terms of piling inventories and hence several company dealerships have announced year-end discounts.
