Indian-Israeli duo present ancient Persian music
New Delhi: At an event to commemorate the exodus of Jewish refugees from Arab lands and Iran, Israel’s ambassador to India, Reuven Azar hosted an evening of musical soiree featuring Yehuda Smith and Shivam Bhardwaj, one an Israeli and the other Indian. They presented Persian classical music.
The ancient classical Persian music (Radif) is a traditional style passed down from teacher to student through generations. Research by Dr Peretz Eliyahu reveals scales and motifs that may have originated in ancient Israel and travelled to Persia during the Temple era, later becoming embedded in Persian music.
Yehuda and Shivam met a few months ago in north India, bonding instantly over their shared devotion for Persian musical traditions that made them create a performance together, which they presented to the audience.
Yehuda is a composer, musician and producer exploring the fusion of ancient and modern music. He plays a variety of instruments, including the kamancheh, oud, guitar, bass guitar and Turkish saz. Yehuda has lived in Israel’s Galilee mountains, where he studied Middle Eastern music traditions, particularly Turkish, Persian and Moroccan, from renowned masters. He also dove into electronic music production. Currently Yehuda is based in Koh Phangan, Thailand. He creates and produces a range of projects, with his flagship project, U-Bow, focused on meditative music combining electronic elements with live instruments, often featuring guest musicians.
Shivam is a skilled vocalist with decades of study and experience across various genres, including North Indian classical music, Persian Sufi music, Qawwali, and contemporary music. Shivam has performed widely, both in India and internationally, and has received numerous scholarships, including the Sahitya Kala Parishad and Sangeet Natak Academy scholarships. Recently, he sang for the music director A.R. Rahman in the film Ponniyin Selvan 2. Shivam performs with his bands, Shivam & the Gypsies and the Tasawwur Qawwali Ensemble, in India and abroad. He is also working with Bollywood composer and music director Salim Merchant on upcoming film projects.
The duo enthralled the audience with their skilful and moving rendition of ancient songs from Persia.
