From diehard fan to Drag Race Down Under finalist

Brisbane’s Freya Armani isn’t worried about her Drag Race Down Under track record ahead of the season four finale this week.

Just because she hasn’t won a major challenge (yet), doesn’t mean she can’t take the crown! Freya sat down with QNews ahead of the Grand Finale, this Friday.

Congratulations on making the Top Four, it’s taken a while for Queensland Queens to get their Down Under due, so it must feel great to represent.

It does, Brisbane is such an incredible state for its art. It’s one of the main reasons I even started drag. Getting out there and seeing how amazing and different the variety of drag and performance art is.

Being on the show and one of the first Brisbane queens to be a finalist is incredible. I feel very honoured and am glad we could show some sickening drag this season.

You have brought a diverse energy to your runways, with only a few weeks to prepare, how did go in wanting to represent?

It’s not the same for every queen, but for me, I went into it aware my drag can fit into different boxes. I wanted to show that on the runway and in challenges. I needed to show the very multifaceted faces of Freya from fashionable, camp, silly and serious.

I’m lucky that the way it played out just suited my drag I think. The runway themes and challenges allowed me to open myself up and show everything I can do.

Was there anything unexpected that surprised you by the experience?

It was eye-opening to look behind the scenes and see how the show works. It was a bit of a shock because I’m a huge Drag Race fan. I watch every episode of every single franchise. I love drag. But seeing how the show was filmed was a surprise for me.

Did that knowledge get in your way or allow you to prepare strongly?

The Snatch Game is a great example of this. I had written out this whole backstory, a script if you will for my character. I tested it on my chosen family people close to me to check if it was funny or worked. And then you get to the set and sit down and it’s completely different.

I was sitting next to Max and Karna and I looked at them and then Michelle and realised that it was totally improv. There was no script to follow and you never know what’s going to happen. You should just make yourself a little outline, create those stories and then crumple them up and throw them out. I wish I had known that beforehand. But that was a really funny moment for me. I didn’t need to go that in-depth with it but it was still it was still enjoyable.

The energy amongst the cast for Season Four has been wonderful, were you expecting that from the other queens?

Honest answer. No. I didn’t think we would become as close as we were or stay as close as we are now. We literally talk to each other every single day. It’s one of the things I cherish the most from the show, the connections we got to make.

I don’t think anyone goes into a competition reality show thinking I’m going to make friends or make sisters for life. Day one we were looking at each other and thinking ‘We saw last season; we know we have to make some good TV and need to put our best foot forward’.

I think we were more open and comfortable talking to each other as if we were backstage at a drag show. And you can see on the TV that from day one onwards we made sure to give the world a good show and show them what down under drag really can do.

Well, it’s days away from the final episode, what can we expect to see from you?

This is one of the episodes I’ve looked forward to rewatching the most myself. Because FINALLY, it’s a dance challenge. I can finally pull out all my stops and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we do.

We got to write our own verses in a previous challenge but that was more musical theatre and character. This time it’s an actual verse and dance challenge. Those are what they’re looking for in the critiques. So expect a really fun show. There’s funny bits, fierce bits and the looks are incredible.

I can’t wait for everyone to see my final runway. This is absolutely my favourite runway of the season. It’s an incredible feeling because I’m on the edge of my seat, waiting to watch myself. I cannot wait. And just because I have no main challenge wins, doesn’t mean I won’t still take the crown.

We’ve had two winners in Drag Race franchises that have been consistent throughout the second half of the competition. So you never know. Anything could happen. In the finale episode of course track record goes into play. But the very last episode is a blank slate. It’s anyone’s game. If you make it to that finale, anyone who’s a finalist has a chance. So I can’t wait to see what happens.

Who would you say is Miss Congeniality of the season?

I will say they were very generous with the editing this season. We were a lot shadier than you’ve seen on TV. In a fun and playful way. I don’t think anyone would say me, but watching it back, I think I was pretty congenial. I didn’t realise I was doing it, but in every episode, I was asking everyone how they were doing and checking up on all the girls. So if it was me would be lovely. But no.

Miss Congeniality could go Karana Ford. She was very sweet and demure and quiet a lot of the time. But when she did speak, she was the heart of the season. Getting close to her during and after the season has been a joy. We’re so close now, she’s one of my favourite people from the show. It’s definitely not Max. Definitely not Nikita. I don’t think it’s any of the other top four either.

Max Drag Queen is the lip-synch assassin of Season Four, if you were up against her on the show what would that be like?

You know, it’s Max and I’ve performed together and it’s one of my favourite things to do.  When we are performing we match each other’s energy because we both understand musicality. and stuff like that. Max is an incredible performer but I think I could hold my own against her in a lip-synch. And that would be a show that’s a double save because I don’t think you’d be able to choose.

Finally, what would you say to all of #TeamFreya who have been supporting you on this journey?

I want to say firstly, for those who have been there from the beginning or those who are joining now. Thank you for your immense support, your love and your kindness. I don’t think I went into this season thinking I was going to be a fan favourite or so well-received.

But the last few weeks, I’ve been seeing and feeling the support from the fans and everyone and it’s been really lovely. It’s very heartwarming because, like I said in the first episode, I’m my own worst critic. I’m super hard on myself. So when people love my drag, the aesthetic, the style, or just like the energy and personality that I have, it makes me feel like I’m doing the right thing in my life. And it just pushes me to want to keep doing more, keep elevating and improving. It means the absolute world to me and I can’t thank them enough.
