India would need 61 lakh workers in tourism & hospitality sector by 2034

India would need 61 lakh workers in the tourism and hospitality sector in the next ten years to meet the growing demand as projected spending is set to rise by 1.2 times, a joint report by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Ernst and Young said on Wednesday.

In the whitepaper on “Employment Landscape in Tourism and Hospitality in India”, CII-EY also said that looking toward 2036-37, the sector is projected to require an additional 61.31 lakh workers to cater to increasing tourism activities.

Tourism and hospitality currently contribute to about 8 percent of India’s total employment. Despite setbacks from the Covid -19 pandemic, the sector is witnessing a strong resurgence, fuelled by domestic tourism.

Specialised skills

Emphasising the need for specialised skills in digital marketing, sustainable tourism, and customer service, the whitepaper suggested developing gamified Learning Management Systems (LMS) for continuous professional development.

Similarly, it also recommended collaborating with industry associations to create clear career advancement pathways and establishing a dedicated taskforce under the Ministry of Tourism to standardise skills and education.

The whitepaper also underscores the importance of incentivising workforce participation, particularly among women, while harnessing opportunities like medical tourism.

India’s rank on the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024 has risen to 39th position as compared to 54th position in 2021.

In 2023, the sector’s direct contribution to India’s GDP surpassed USD 231 billion, making India the second-highest tourism GDP contributor in the Asia-Pacific region, the report mentioned.
