NICTA and USAID ink agreement to boost PNG’s Digital future

The National Information and Communication Technology Authority (NICTA) has partnered with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to accelerate Papua New Guinea’s digital transformation.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between the two organizations, outlining a strategic partnership that will focus on modernizing regulations to keep pace with technological advancements.

USAID’s Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership (DCCP) will work in hand with NICTA to rollout the partnership initiatives.

Speaking during the signing, the USAID country representative Ms Nino Nadiradze assured NICTA of her support to provide the knowledge and information necessary to empower the transition.

“Today is an important milestone in our partnership and we are looking forward to supporting the NICTA leadership and the team,” she stated.

The partnership will focus on key initiatives such as, preparing for the deployment of 5G technology to enhance connectivity, empowering consumers with greater choice and flexibility through mobile number portability, and building the capacity of the population to use technology responsibly and securely.

NICTA Board Member John Cholai, summarized these initiatives as; Reviewing and Modernizing PNG’s Regulatory Framework, Enhancing Spectrum Management, the rollout of 5G Services, Implementing Mobile Number Portability (MNP), and Promoting Digital Literacy and Cybersecurity capacity building

Cholai emphasized the importance of this partnership in bridging the digital divide and ensuring that all Papua New Guineans have access to affordable and reliable ICT services.

By working together, NICTA and USAID aim to create a more connected, resilient, and inclusive digital future for PNG.

Cholai expressed his sincere appreciation to USAID and the Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership (DCCP) Pacific Activity team for their support and shared vision with PNG.
