Top 5 upcoming mainstream electric cars in 2025 – Car News
From Maruti Suzuki to Tata Motors, here’s what’s in store from mainstream car manufacturers in 2025 when it comes to fully-electric cars.
2024 was a very busy year with plenty of new car launches in India and a major chunk of them were battery-powered models. The year started with the launch of Tata Punch EV and later followed up by the likes of BYD Seal EV, Tata Curvv EV, and MG Windsor EV to name a few. The year concluded with a bang as Mahindra launched the BE 6e and XEV 9e, two of the most highly anticipated EVs of this year.
The same is expected in the coming year as well with a plethora of electric passenger vehicles lined up for launch. These include both luxury as well as mainstream models. In this article, we focus on the latter and find out which are the biggest EV launches confirmed for 2025.
1. Maruti Suzuki eVitara
The first big EV launch for 2025 will be the eVitara which recently broke cover at EICMA 2024 in Milan, Italy. Based on the Suzuki eVX concept which was showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo, the eVitara will make its debut in its full form at the upcoming edition of Bharat Mobility Expo in Pragati Maidan. However, production may commence around spring next year which suggests a possible market launch in May-June 2025.

Maruti Suzuki eVitara
Based on the new Heartect-e platform manufactured along with Toyota, two battery options — 49 kWh and 61 kWh. The former is only available in 2WD while the latter is available in both 2WD with a single motor and the AWD with twin motors on each axle. The 49 kWh has an output of 142 bhp and 189 Nm of torque while the single motor 61 kWh produces 172 bhp and 189 Nm. The top-of-the-line AWD mode churns out 181 bhp and 300 Nm of torque.
2. Hyundai Creta EV
A direct rival to the eVitara, the Hyundai Creta EV will also make its maiden appearance at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Expo. The design of the Creta EV will most likely remain unchanged barring few subtle variations. Being an EV, it will house a typical closed front grille and more aerodynamic 17-inch alloy wheels for better efficiency.

According to reports, the Creta EV is anticipated to be built on the modified ICE platform that underpins Creta. While there’s no official word on it regarding its specs, the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV is expected to draw power from a 45 kWh battery. It will borrow the same powertrain as Hyundai Kona electric sold internationally.
3. Tata Harrier EV
Tata Motors has officially announced that the Harrier EV is set to debut next year, following much anticipation. The Harrier EV was first unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo and later showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024. Tata Motors revealed that the Harrier EV will offer multiple configurations, including single or dual motor options, as well as front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive setups. Notably, the Harrier EV will be the first electric vehicle from Tata Motors to feature a twin-motor setup with all-wheel drive.

4. Tata Sierra EV
Harrier will not be the only EV coming from Tata Motors next year. The homegrown carmaker will reincarnate the Sierra nameplate in both ICE and EV powertrain. Unlike the older-gen Sierra, the new-gen Sierra will be a traditional 5-door setup. The Sierra EV will be based on the same Acti.ev platform as Curvv EV and Punch EV. While powertrain details of the Sierra EV are still under wraps we expect more details to be unravelled at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Expo before hitting the roads most likely in mid-2025 or around the festive season.

5. Mahindra XEV 7e
An all-electric equivalent of the XUV700, the XEV 7e will most likely be the next Electric Origin model from Mahindra. A trademark for the same was recently filed. Technical details of the new Mahindra XEV 7e are not out yet, however, it is likely to share its powertrain from the recently launched XEV 9e. Expect Mahindra to offer a 59kWh and 79kWh battery packs paired to a single motor that drives the rear wheels.
